The Race

The Mini-Transat is a single-handed yacht race across the Atlantic Ocean sailed in 6.5 meter sailing yachts. It first took place in 1977 and is held bi-annually. The competition has originally been created by Bob Salmon with the intention to give young sailors the opportunity to test their skills in a safe, well managed off-shore race at relatively affordable cost. Due to its popularity the Mini-Transat has over the years become one of ocean racings high profile events.

The next Mini-Transat will be started on September 17, 2005.

The course will take the fleet to the Canaries, from where, after a brief stop-over, the race will continue across the equator into the South Atlantic Ocean to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.

The total distance of the race is approx. 4.200 nautical miles.
